* In the 2nd century BC Vietnam was conquered by the Chinese. The Chinese had control over the area for over 1,000 years and had a huge impact on the Vietnamese. In North Vietnam people resented the Chinese. * A specific group would be the Trung Sisters who actually led a rebellion against the Chinese in 40 AD. - But in 43 AD the Chinese stopped the rebellion and the sisters then killed themselves. * In 938 leader Ngo Quygen defeated the Chinese at the battle of Bach Dang River, transitioning North Vietnam into an independant state. * Mongols invade Vietnam twice times, in 1257 & 1284 they captured the capital, but both times they withdrew. Then in 1288 the leader Tran Hung Dao routed the Mongols at the Bach Dang River * In the 19 century Vietnam became a French colony, but the French took over Vietnam in stages. In 1867 the french took over South Vietnam. By 1882, Vietnam was forced into becoming a French protectorate. Then in 1887 Vietnam became a part of the French colony of Indo-China. - They Vietnamese wanted independance.
